Educational Farm Visits

Come and explore Dart Raffe farm with one of our guided, educational farm visits for schools and other groups of 6 or more. We do this as part of our Environmental Stewardship Scheme, and visits are normally free of charge.

Booking a visit

In the first instance, please telephone the farm. Visits are free but you will need to organise and pay for transport. Toilet facilities and picnic areas are provided.

What you can see and do on the farm

educational farm visits in DevonThe farm is located in peacefully rolling countryside, near to Tiverton in Devon with the farmhouse and some historic farm buildings located on a site that records show to have been farmed since the time of the Domesday Book.

The farm is managed as a mixed arable and livestock unit, with crop production and sheep. Of particular interest is the move over the last 12 years away from intensive farming to the introduction of a range of Environmental Stewardship Schemes based on protection and enhancement of wildlife and habitats and on creation of public access with footpaths and a bridleway.

A typical visit might include a walk along our nature trail , which takes about 1½-2 hours, including discussion en route. Gerald, who has lived and farmed at Dart Raffe since he was a child, is happy to act as guide. A map and details of the nature trail can be downloaded here .

Alternatively a themed walk can be arranged - this can vary according to group interests. There is a 4km bridleway for horse riders or walkers. A map of the bridleway and footpaths can be downloaded here.

Cars and minibuses can be parked in the car park next to the lake, at the start of the nature trail. There is parking for horse boxes at the start of the bridleway - please ask for details. There is a toilet with hand washing facilities near to the lake.

On wet days, the Old Barn adjacent to the farmhouse can be used as a schoolroom. We have a collection of old farm tools and implements, as well as some historical information and pictures of the farm, which can be displayed for groups on request.
